Hi! So, I’ve never really blogged before so bare with me…I’m Polly, I’ve just finished week three on the 2011 Edelman Grad Scheme (how time flies when you’re having fun/working really hard and loving it). For any aspiring future Edelman Grads who might be reading this, in case you don’t know the scheme is made up of 6 rotations, each lasting 5 weeks. Us Grads (of which there are six) are lucky enough to sample the departmental worlds of Digital, Technology, Healthcare, Public Affairs, Consumer and Corporate&Financial. A smorgasbord of PR disciplines if you will. Round One for me is Digital.

I joined the digital team as an avid Facebook user, rare Tweeter and occasional LinkedIn visitor and that was about it. Having spent 3 weeks with the team-all of whom are really friendly and always helpful, I have learnt more than I thought there was possible (cliche!) about all things Digital from social media content and engagement, to community management and monitoring, to Facebook and Twitter analytics, and not forgetting CMSs, IPs, RTs, QBRs, URLs, CTRs and CSOs (seriously, none of those are made up!) It’s been a very steep curve for me, but I’m so pleased and relieved that it hasn’t gone over my head, and that in fact it’s not only sinking in but it’s getting embedded in my psyche. Apparently I’ve loved Digital all along.

So far I’ve had the pleasure of getting involved with 3 completely different clients, doing totally varied tasks for each. From a host of content and engagement related projects for an amazing leading tech brand (so amazing I can’t even divulge that much), to building fan profiles of The Dove Woman, (Dove are one of my all-time favourite brands and are part of the Unilever account), to launching and monitoring a Twitter campaign for Allen&Overy, a top law firm. As you can tell I’m now very busy and important (I wish) so I should get back to it, but watch this space for all the ins and outs of my lessons learned and clients covered during my days in Digital.

So I realised I have been fairly relaxed about writing frequent grad blog posts, but that is only because it has been so busy! The PA team has had lots on and have been working so hard in the run up to Christmas.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this rotation and the experience has definitely reignited my interest in politics that I left behind at A-level and only briefly dabbled in at university with American political science. The team have been fantastic, very patient and supportive, especially when I was off helping with the panto.

I know Abi has already written a little bit about the panto, so all that’s left to say is that it did go fantastically well (even if I do say so myself!) I was responsible for organising all the actors and coordinating rehearsals. The actors were brilliant and I was so proud of what we had achieved. (And loved performing as the Panto horse!) The panto was also a great way to get to know lots of people across different departments. And the party was a lot of fun, the hangover afterwards…not so much.

So a big thank you to PA, and here’s to Healthcare in the new year. Merry Christmas!

This week has gone so fast, and I am now really feeling like part of the corporate team. I now (hopefully) know everyone’s names (!) and have a pretty good grasp of their long list of clients.

The last couple of weeks have focussed on introducing all 3 grads to each department. With many clients crossing different practices, it is important to know how the company works together to achieve such fantastic results.

We have also been trained on lots of household matters, such as finance and time sheets, so no excuses now not to fill them in.

Highlight of the week for me, is receiving a round of applause in my first company meeting for volunteering my help to organise the Christmas party. Embarrassing definitely, but also an indication of how Edelman really values its employees and this only added to me feeling very welcome and even more settled.

Well a new set of graduates heralds a new set of insights into the life of an Edelman grad. We’ve been at Edelman for nearly 6 weeks and are now coming to the end of our second rotation; I’m in the Strategic Media Unit at the moment. Next week sees my move to Public Affairs, a department that I am very much looking forward to. Getting stuck in early, I got the opportunity on Monday night to accompany Victoria to a Conservative City Circle event.

Philip Hammond MP, the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury was speaking and it promised to be an interesting evening. This was my first opportunity to go to such an event and I jumped at the chance.

The evening started with mingling amongst the attendees; a selection of Prospective Parliamentary Candidates, some MPs and people from the city. This was a great opportunity to get the Edelman name around.

Phillip Hammond MP then gave an engaging and informative speech about the current financial situation, which was very well received. As Edelman has a host of clients in the financial sector, the talk was obviously of key interest to us.

As well as providing an excellent talk, the City Circle was a wonderful opportunity to ease into networking. At first, it was a little daunting having to explain to people what Edelman did and why we were at the event. However, after negotiating the art of eating canapés whilst still being composed and maintaining a conversation, I found it easier to tell people who I was and what exactly it was that I was doing within Edelman.

With plenty of people to talk to I found the event very enjoyable and look forward to the chance of attending many more events with my move to Public Affairs next week.
